Artist’s Statement:
My art work is heavily influenced by the relationship between my mother and me. Rooting back to my childhood, my past has inspired me to create art that suggests what my past is about.
The aim of my work is to create a piece that expresses my relationship with my mother but also leads the audience into different ideas of what my work is or what it could be about without giving them excessive information.
I do this by the use of Blind contour drawings. Focusing on old photographs, I use a continuous line and don’t look at the material that I am drawing on. I draw a series of such drawings and put them all together like a map. A map my past that reflects on my future.
I have also introduced collage into my work in order to bring in different drawings and ideas including photographs and objects.
The artists that have influenced my consist of Ian Skarlsky and Alison Kunath because of their blind contour drawings, Furthermore Ron Mueck and Louise bourgeois have inspired me heavily due to their focus on personal and intimate relationships as they both focus on their relationship with their parents through ‘Dead Dad 1996’ and ‘Maman’.
My future ambitions consist of creating a large scale collage piece that encases two walls that allows the audience to wonder around and explore the several aspects I am trying to express.
